Gaslamp Luxury Theater Raises Curtain on Rooftop Bar and Restaurant

Courtesy of Theatre Box Entered via a flower-lined tunnel, the 5,000-square-foot outdoor bar offers views of the downtown skyline and Coronado Bridge. Themed like a Japanese garden, with cherry blossom trees and a custom mural by Tokyo-based artist Kahori Maki, it spans a cocktail bar, a sushi bar, and a lounge with fire pits. With capacity for 200 guests, 5th & Sky will be open Thursday through Saturday from 4 p.m. until midnight and from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday for all-day brunch vibes. Happy hour will be featured daily from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. and DJs will be in residence on weekend nights.
This second phase of Theatre Box, which is a partnership between Hollywood’s TCL Chinese Theatre and the Sugar Factory, includes two celeb-backed ventures that will be going in on the ground floor: Pitbull’s Miami Beach-based iLov305 and Nick Cannon’s Wild ‘N Out Sports Bar and Arcade.
Theatre Box, the Gaslamp’s expansive luxury theater, dining, and entertainment complex which opened in December, is starting to fill in the remainder of its 73,000-square-foot, two-level space with this weekend’s grand opening of 5th & Sky Rooftop Gardens & Lounge, a new venue perched high above the corner of Fifth and G.
Its menu is based on small plates, from non-traditional sushi rolls like the Gaslamp Roll, filled with crab, avocado, and asparagus and topped with smoked filet mignon, avocado mousse, crispy shallots, and eel sauce to pork belly and yellow watermelon pops with jalapeno-maple syrup and grilled levain bread topped with smoked filet mignon carpaccio, crispy capers, baby arugula, lemon zest, citrus herb aioli, and shaved Manchego. The nightlife spot’s signature drinks include a lychee martini and a spicy tamarind margarita.
